What is broken ankle?

A fracture is a partial or complete break in a bone. A broken ankle may occur when one or more of the bones in the ankle area fractures or cracks. The bone can penetrate the skin (open or compound fracture); or there is no open wound with exposed fractured bone (closed fracture).
