What is Mercury amalgam fillings removed?

Due to the known toxicity of mercury it has been suggested that dental fillings containing mercury are unsafe and should be removed. In ALS there have been no long-term studies to suggest the fillings are harmful, nor that removal has any beneficial health effects.
