The human sleep-wake cycle is entrained into the 24-hour day. The biological clock, located in the hypothalamus sends out an alerting pulse throughout the day. This alerting pulse reaches its peak about 2-3 hours before one's habitual bedtime and serves to offset the homeostatic drive that accumulates during waking hours.
